Coastal Clean-Up and Marine Waste Collection
Clearing plastic waste from beaches and raising community awareness of the effect of plastic pollution on marine life and fishing livelihoods.

Project
A community tree planting exercise and panel workshop on environmental sustainability, held from 3 to 19 June 2022. About 300 trees were planted.
NISD organised a community-driven tree planting initiative in the Mbonge and Isangele areas, aimed at restoring forest cover and enhancing biodiversity. By planting native species, the project set out to combat soil erosion, improve air quality and contribute to climate change mitigation.
The exercise was accompanied by a panel workshop that brought together environmental stakeholders, education and governmental authorities. Discussion covered biodiversity and land conservation for climate adaptation, vulnerability assessment to identify high-risk social and natural systems, and disaster risk management to prepare infrastructure and communities for extreme weather.
Workshop sessions included system mapping linking forests, climate and their impact on society; demonstration of planting technique, including digging proper holes and handling bare-root seedlings; and discussion of carbon sequestration, community maintenance of the trees, and selection of species able to survive future climate conditions.
The mayor of the locality and other environmental stakeholders in the division attended the planting exercise.
